Microsoft Facing New Criticisms Over Xbox One Energy Consumption

Microsoft Facing New Criticisms Over Xbox One Energy Consumption

Natural Resources Defense Council says Microsoft's new Xbox One energy tweaks are a good first step, but don't go far enough.

In the wake of a recent report from the Natural Resources Defense Council, Microsoft last week published ablog post that outlined the various steps the company has taken and will take to improve the Xbox One's overall energy consumption. Now, NRDC senior scientist Noah Horowitz has published a response to that blog post, saying it was a positive first step, but also calling on the technology giant to do more.
The key change Microsoft is making for the Xbox One is giving new console owners the ability to choosethe "Energy-saving" mode right out of the box instead of the default "Instant-on" power setting. This will be rolled out through a future platform update in the next few months. Horowitz said this is "great news," though he took issue with the wording that will be used in the new prompt.
As you can see in the image above, Microsoft's language is quite impartial. The Instant-on message is very positive in nature, using phrases like "faster startup time" and "get updates automatically." By comparison, the Energy-saving message says players who choose this option can expect "slower startup time" and are warned that they will "get interrupted for updates."
Horowitz also points out that Microsoft's message does not include the respective power consumption levels for each option, which the group estimates is 12.5 watts for Instant-on and less than 1 watt for Energy-saving. If people had these numbers in front of them when choosing a power state, "a lot more people" might choose the Energy-saving option, Horowitz said.
"And that would mean a lot less climate change pollution being emitted from generating the extra electricity wasted to power these devices when they're NOT being used," he explained.
In the near-term, the NRDC wants Microsoft to change the language of the prompt to offer something more neutral, though no suggestions were provided. The group is further calling on Microsoft to make the Energy-saving option the default power state. On a longer-term basis, the NRDC wants Micosoft to reduce the Xbox One's standby power use to 1 watt with Instant-on. Horowitz said the NRDC recognizes that this will require software and hardware changes and could take a while to be implemented.
For its part, Microsoft says the Xbox One's Instant-on mode is something fans have been calling for since the Xbox 360 era. The company even said that, since the console was released in November 2013, it has been able to reduce the total power used while in Instant-on by a third.
"When factoring the monthly system updates, new features in apps, and games and automatic mobile purchase downloads, the Instant-on setting easily saves users countless hours of needlessly waiting," the company said last week.
In response to this, Horowitz said that in fact, Xbox One updates "are not that frequent." He added that players are freely able to download updates at a later time.
"With today's technology, there is no reason for a device to be drawing 12.5 watts 24/7 just so it can be ready to receive and install an update," Horowitz said. "If your cell phone or tablet operated this way, the battery would run out of power almost immediately. These devices receive notifications that updates are available for downloading, often in the background while the device is in use."
"Microsoft's competitor Nintendo provides an elegant and effective solution whereby its Wii U game console automatically wakes for a few seconds hourly to check for updates," he added. "If an update exists, it downloads and installs it and then goes back to sleep at less than 1 watt. This results in a trivial amount of energy spent for background updates compared to Microsoft's current energy-guzzling approach."
Further still, Horowitz called out Microsoft for failing to mention that one of the biggest reasons why the Xbox One uses "so much power" in the Instant-on state is because of its Kinect voice recognition feature. This lets people with a Kinect camera simply say "Xbox On!" to wake the console up.
We've reached out to Microsoft to see if they have anything new to add regarding the NRDC's comments today. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.
People who already own an Xbox One can choose the Energy-saving Xbox One option through the Settings menu.
Horowitz ended his blog post by saying he is optimistic that Microsoft's engineering team will come up with solutions to improve the Xbox One's overall energy consumption.
"We are thrilled that Microsoft's talented engineers are now hard at work trying to develop user-friendly, energy-saving solutions to these issues and are optimistic the results will be consistent with the company's historic leadership position on environmental sustainability," he said. "We'll report back on the results."

WoW's Next Patch Adds Ship Building, Plus a New Zone and Raid

WoW's Next Patch Adds Ship Building, Plus a New Zone and Raid

Establish a shipyard at your garrison to partake in naval missions.

The next patch for World of Warcraft is an exciting one, as it introduces a new zone, raid, and a shipyard feature that lets you build your own ships.
Blizzard has officially revealed the patch notes for the 6.2.0 update, which does not yet have a release date. Perhaps the most interesting new feature is the shipyard, which you can build once your character has upgraded a garrison to level 3. With a shipyard added, you can have ships constructed that can then be sent on naval missions, which Blizzard says it will be talking about more as development continues.
Building a shipyard is also a prerequisite for visiting the newest zone, the Tanaan Jungle. There you'll find daily quests that offer resources for use at the shipyard, as well as "open-world questing with rare creatures and hidden treasures scattered throughout the zone." The Tanaan Jungle is also home to the new raid, Hellfire Citadel, which includes 13 bosses.
The patch also introduces a new difficulty level for Warlords of Draenor's dungeons called Mythic. Blizzard says this "is geared towards players that enjoy tackling difficult content in smaller groups and is designed to provide an alternate progression path." Mythic dungeons have a weekly lockout, but offer item level 680 gear drops, and have a chance for an end boss that drops item level 700 loot.
6.2 offers a raft of other changes and additions as well, which you can read about in full on Blizzard'swebsite. Alternatively, you can head to the Public Test Realms and try out some of this for yourself, as the patch is now live ahead of its official release, though only certain content is available for testing.

GTA 5 PC in 4K is an "Eye-Opener"

GTA 5 PC in 4K is an "Eye-Opener," Rockstar Says

"It really does make you look at the world differently and in greater detail as you would expect."

The long-awaited PC edition of Grand Theft Auto V features a multitude of high-end graphics options, one of which is stunning 4K resolution. Now, developer Rockstar Games has boasted that this visual quality, for people whose computers are strong enough to handle it, will change the way they see Los Santos.
"4K is an eye-opener when you see if for the first time," the studio told PC Gamer. "It really does make you look at the world differently and in greater detail as you would expect."
"That said, you could probably say the same thing about a lot of the other high-end graphical options and ultimately it will be personal preference which particular resolution and graphical settings that each player decides to settle on."
Rockstar also outlined the PC specs players will need to run GTA 5 in 4K at 30fps and 60fps.
"To run the game on a 4K display at 30fps, you'll need at minimum an AMD HD 7870 or NVidia GTX 760 with 2GB of VRAM," the studio explained. "To be able to run the game at 4K resolution at 60fps you'll need a high-end SLI or Crossfire setup."
Addressing GTA V's graphics for the PC version generally, Rockstar said it of course cannot promise locked 60fps for everyone. The beauty of the PC as a platform, the studio explained, is that players have the freedom to emphasize graphics over frame rate or the other way around.
"The optimal way to run the game will depend on an individual’s preference," Rockstar said. "Some people may want to dial the settings down to hit a really high frame rate, while others may appreciate a slower frame rate with the graphical settings dialed way up. Overall, with so many variables in various CPU/GPU configurations and depending on game settings, frame rates will vary widely."
GTA V's full PC specs, minimum and recommended, are available here.
PC Gamer's interview with Rockstar goes a lot deeper and is well worth a read for fans of the GTA franchise looking for more news about the PC edition. You can read the full interview here.
GameSpot has also spoken with Rockstar about the PC edition of GTA V. Check out our interview to learn more about topics such as modding, DLC timing between PC and console, and more.
After multiple delays, GTA V for PC--which also comes with powerful, PC-only video editing tools--officially arrives tomorrow, April 14. However, gamers in the United States who buy the digital version can start playing later this afternoon.

DESTINY'S HOUSE OF WOLVES EXPANSION WILL HAVE NO NEW RAID

Destiny's second expansion, titled House of Wolves, will not have a new Raid and will instead offer a three-player cooperative multiplayer arena mode.
According the Bungie blog, the developer “didn’t make this decision lightly” but is creating a new Raid for a release later this year. This gives weight to Activision executive Eric Hirshberg’s claims thebiggest content release yet is coming after House of Wolves.
The “new cooperative end game activity” packaged with House of Wolves is a three-player cooperative multiplayer arena called The Prison of Elders that will focus on “variety, replayability, and skill.”

Elder Scrolls Online's Xbox One/PS4 Discounted Transfer Process Detailed

Elder Scrolls Online's Xbox One/PS4 Discounted Transfer Process Detailed

If you qualify, you can get a console copy for $20.

Provided you qualify, you can purchase a heavily discounted copy of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited for Xbox One or PlayStation 4 that will also carry your progress over.
As detailed across a series of articles on ESO's support website, some of ESO's computer players are eligible to buy a digital copy on console for $20 (€14.99 or £12.99). To do so, you need to have purchased and registered a PC/Mac copy by no later than June 30, 2014. If you did that, you have from now through May 9 to visit ESO's PC/Mac store and purchase the discounted version, which is available under the long-winded name of "The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited for Console with account copy."
Buying this will get you a full digital copy on your choice of Xbox One or PS4, no different from the version you'd be able to buy from the respective consoles' online stores for $60. Once you've purchased this, you'll receive a key and instructions via email sometime ahead of the console game's launch on June 9.
Also as part of this process, your account will be copied to the console version. It's important to note that your account will literally be copied--it isn't simply being moved, meaning you'll be able to continue playing on computer after your account is copied. However, your progress between the two platforms (or three, if you pay to be transferred to both consoles) will be separate from one another after the copy occurs, a date for which has not been set.
The transfer will bring your characters to consoles along with their gold, inventories, and bank inventories, but a number of things will be left behind:
  • Crowns
  • Mail
  • Guilds
  • Friends
  • Ignore list
  • Trading house
  • Raid leaderboards status
  • AvA leaderboard status
  • Deleted Items
  • Deleted Characters
There's no word on whether console transfers will be made available for those who have bought ESO since the end of last June.
ESO: Tamriel Unlimited marks the game's long-awaited console debut. It won't require a subscription fee(outside of Xbox Live Gold), as has been the case with the computer version since March, but it will offer an optional subscription and other ways to keep spending money on it.
